Pageat Interview Queen

The Perfect Matte Lip

Recently, matte lipsticks have been making a huge comeback. There’s a world of possibilities with this opaque, gloss-free  formula, from subtle and understated to a bold, statement lip. Matte lipsticks are perfect for any occasion, whether that may be a beauty pageant night to showcase a bright, friendly smile or to complete a casual day-to-day look. The formula for a matte lipstick isn’t easy to perfect, but I have a few brands that will give you the perfect matte lip.

Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil

These lip pencils are truly incredible. While it is high-end, the finish is well worth it. As stated in the name, this product is actually a big, crayon-like pencil, which allows easy application. It glides on smoothly and easily without dragging along the lips. While some matte lipsticks have the tendency to dry out the lips and have the potential to appear cakey, this lip pencil really does have a velvety feel on the lips. It is enriched with Vitamin E, which makes it amazingly moisturizing, and it lasts for hours without feathering or bleeding. The range of colors in this line is amazing too– there are 19 beautifully pigmented shades to choose from. From the subtle nude called Belle de Jour to the classic red called Cruella, which is perfect for the winter months, you won’t be disappointed with your options. It can also be layered with other lipsticks to create a multi-dimensional, bold look if you’re looking to make a statement on the pageant stage. All in all, I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a quality lip product with lots of possibilities.

Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Mattes

Maybelline has a relatively new line of matte lipsticks that are definitely more affordable, but still deliver a great matte finish. Unlike the Nars Lip Pencil, this line is comprised of proper lipsticks. At ten shades, the line is about half as small the above line, but there is still a great variety in shades. There are a couple nudes such as the Daringly Nude, a couple bright, fun purples and pinks, and a few deep reds such as Divine Wine for the upcoming season as well. So, no matter your skin-tone and undertones, you’ll be sure to find a flattering shade in this line. Once again, as the name states, these truly do have a creamy texture similar to that of regular, glossy lipsticks, which is always a plus because it won’t leave your lips feeling dry. This formula is nourishing and applies smoothly, with no need to worry about it smudging or rubbing off easily. The color pay-off of this line is also incredible. Every shade is opaque and beautifully pigmented. You certainly won’t be disappointed with this line.

BONUS – Tips for applying matte lipsticks:

When applying a matte lipstick, it’s important to properly prep your lips beforehand to ensure long-lasting wear and a beautiful finish. It all starts the night before, by applying a thick lip balm to soak in and moisturize those lips, leaving them smooth and soft. Before applying the lipstick, be sure to exfoliate your lips with a sugary lip scrub to get rid of dry skin that can make even the best of lipsticks appear flaky and unflattering, and then apply a light layer of lip balm. Give this a few minutes to absorb, because the formula in matte lipsticks may cause the product to slide around on your lips and rub off when combined directly with lip balm. Once you’ve let the lip balm absorb, apply your matte lipstick for the center of your upper lips and outward, tracing the shape of your lips, then applying it on your bottom lip. Finally, be sure to blot of any excess lipstick to ensure it doesn’t bleed out or end up on your teeth.

Tell us about your favorite shades of matte lipstick for this fall and winter!

Nighttime Skincare Routine

Proper skincare is an absolute must for any girl, but especially for pageant girls whose faces are in the spotlight. And establishing a daily routine helps achieve and maintain beautiful, healthy skin. Without further ado, let’s get started!

Removing Your Makeup:

The first step in any skincare routine, before even washing your face, is to remove all of your makeup, so that any traces of various products you use don’t seep into your pores overnight and cause breakouts. You can use a makeup-removing cleanser to wash your face while your remove your makeup, makeup wipes for a quick and easy clean, or a makeup-removing solution like Bioderma Crealine H20 which gently removes waterproof makeup or heavy stage makeup for a post-pageant routine. Another makeup removing product that has recently taken over the beauty world is a cleansing balm, which moisturizes the skin as you massage it into your skin to remove makeup.

Cleansing Your Skin:

blog4photo5Next, it’s time to use a cleanser. Facial cleansers are meant to remove dirt, grime, sweat, and oil build-up from throughout the day. Even if you use a makeup-removing cleanser, I recommend cleansing once more to ensure your face is absolutely clean. When cleansing, it’s always a good idea to use warm water, which opens up the pores and allows the cleanser to penetrate and clear your pores. Cleansers like Cetaphil Daily Cleanser or Simple Foaming Cleanser are great for all skin-types, even sensitive skin. Once you’ve finished cleansing, gently pat your face with a washcloth or muslin without rubbing it in and irritating the skin.

Face Scrub and Face Masks:

The next step is to exfoliate your skin with a gentle scrub. This helps remove dead skin, reduces dullness, cleans your pores. I recommend exfoliating every other day to avoid irritating your skin and causing redness. Once a week, I also recommend using a face mask after completing the above steps to deeply penetrate pores and draw out impurities. There are a large variety of face masks that target a number of different skin problems, such as acne, dry skin, discoloration, etc., so identify what you’d like to focus on before choosing one. Face masks with fresh ingredients, such as the ones found at Lush, are even more healthy for your skin.

Using  A Toner:

Next, you’ll want to apply a toner to your face. A lot of people aren’t aware of the benefits of using a facial toner, but it is an important step in the skincare routine. Toners help to minimize pores, balance the pH level of your skin after cleansing, remove the last traces of cleanser or grime, and generally refresh the face. Dab some toner onto a cotton pad and sweep it all over your face in an upward motion, then allow to the toner to absorb and do its job.

Serums and Spot Treatments:blog4photo3

Once you’ve applied a toner, it’s time for your serums and spot treatments. These can vary greatly depending on your skin-type, and are contrentrated products meant to target specific skin problems. This can range from a spot acne treatment such as Clean and Clear’s Advantage Spot Acne Treatment to The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Overnight Serum-in-Oil for dry skin that needs intense moisture. Go ahead and apply your serums, then wait a couple minutes to allow it to sink it to your skin.

Moisturizing Your Face:

Last but not least, theblog4photo4 time has come to moisturize. Night creams generally have a heavier formula than a daytime moisturizer and are meant to be absorbed into the skin throughout the night. A personal favorite of mine is Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar Night Cream, which locks in moisture and leaves your skin soft and smooth. If you use an eye cream, now it is the time to use dab that under your eyes as well.

It may sound like a lot at first, but once you’ve established the routine, it’s not very time-consuming. This routine can be entirely customized based on whether you have dry, oily, sensitive, or combination skin. You’ll start to see the benefits to regular skincare within days and your skin will be glowing during your pageant!

Spotlight: Lush Cosmetics & Strawberry Hedgehog

Let’s talk organic. Let’s talk natural. Let’s talk handmade. Now let’s talk about all of these qualities and more in skin care and cosmetics. Every beauty pageant contestant wants glowing and healthy skin, especially when she’s up close with the judges answering interview questions, of course. And we can all agree that our skin needs and deserves the best kind of nourishment, and sometimes natural and organic is the best way to go. With these brands, you’ll know exactly what goes into the products you use on your face and body.

 LUSH COSMETICS:

Lush has been a personal favorite of mine for quite a while. Lush has a philosophy of buying ingredients ethically, involvement in charity work, environmentally friendly production and packaging, fighting animal testing, and making handmade, fresh beauty products that are great for your hair, skin, and conscience. From their colorful and fragrant bath bombs and bubble bars to their solid shampoos and fresh face masks, it’s hard not to be enticed. But the quality is what’s really amazing.

Personally, I love their bath bombs, which fizz and create a colorful, aromatic, and moisturizing bath experience to really pamper yourself. My favorites are Phoenix Rising, a warm apple cinnamon-scented one, and Honey Bee, a light honey-scented one, which can be seen in the photo below, along with a few of the other bath bombs offered at Lush.

They also have a great selection of face masks that work for all different skin types. I love their Mask of Magnanimity, which is great for all skin types, and Cupcake, which looks and smells like chocolate and is for oily skin. Both are hydrating and make your face feel nice and loved. You can see the “Cupcake” mask along with all of the other fresh masks that Lush offers in the beautiful display below.

blog1photo1

Next, I have to mention their Charity Pot body lotion, which feels amazing as a daily moisturizer for your body. A great bonus to that product is that all proceeds go to charity!

Last but not least, let’s talk about their soaps, which are all super colorful and smell incredible. A lot of them contain pieces of fruit, oatmeal, herbs, or seaweed to exfoliate your skin as you use them. One of their most popular soaps is a honey-scented one Honey I Washed the Kids. Another one that I love is the exfoliating Sea Vegetable, which can be seen below along with several more Lush soaps.

Now, the variety of products that they offer goes way beyond the few that I highlighted above, so I definitely recommend checking out their website to see more!

 STRAWBERRY HEDGEHOG:

Another great brand to look out for is this local Arizona company (don’t worry, they ship!). Not only are all of their products handmade, but they are also vegan, free of preservatives, and full of high-quality ingredients so you know your skin will be in good hands with these products.

All of their soaps are plant-based and organic and gentle on your skin. A few soaps to note are the Patchouli Orange, Blueberry Lavender, and the Tea Tree Rosemary, which is a facial cleanser. They also have a “soap club” where you can subscribe to receive either one or three luxurious soaps every month if you’re interested in trying out a few different ones.

They also offer great skincare products like Organic Shea Butter to deeply moisturize dry skin and a Raw Sugar Scrub to exfoliate and smooth skin, both of which are packaged in adorable vintage jars.

Their facial care line includes Balancing Facial Toner for your pores, Blemish Treatment to combat acne, and Hydrating Mist to keep your face feeling refreshed throughout the day.

This is definitely a brand to look into. It’s unique, all-natural, and high quality! Check out their website: http://strawberryhedgehog.com.

The fact that both of these companies go beyond beauty and support charities, the environment, fair trade, vegan and vegetarian ingredients might dovetail nicely with some pageant girls’ belief systems or platforms that pertain to helping the environment or healthy living.

If you’ve shopped at Lush or Strawberry Hedgehog before, let us know which products are your favorites!

All-Natural Beauty: Skin Care Part I

All-Natural Beauty_Skin Care Part I(1)Hello my lovely pageant ladies! Skin care is such an important part of every woman’s beauty routine, and I think being more conscious of what we put on our bodies is equally as important. Recently, my skin has not been behaving so well, so I have decided to scrap my normal routine and try to go all-organic.

Thus, I decided to bring my skincare journey to you guys! There is not a huge amount of literature that concretely says which organic brands are the best or what organic products are the best. However, after scouring the Internet and reading through almost a bajillion posts and watching Youtubers’ reviews, I have come up with a few top-notch organic brands that seem to be pretty popular.

Dr. Hausckha

Dr. Hauschka is a biodynamic, German skincare brand. What is biodynamic? Biodynamic is a more holistic way to view the agricultural process. It combines ethics, ecology, and spirituality for a more wholesome process. One could surmise that it is one step up from organic. The brand attempts to keep the body within its natural rhythm by creating products that balance your skin out rather than hiding or covering up the problem temporarily. Their top products are their Cleansing Milk and Rose Day Cream.

In addition to their skin care they also have a makeup line that wins quite a few awards for being green and organic. The brand has been around since the late 1960s and being all natural has always been their motto, what more could a pageant girl ask for?

Dr. Bronners

People seem to have an unending love affair with Dr. Bronners. This may have to do with the laundry list of things their soap is capable of in addition to the fact it is fair trade and organic. From washing dishes to washing your body, this brand does it right. People also enjoy their lip balms and lotions. They have a delectable range of scents from energizing peppermint to calming lavender. No matter your tastes having a bottle of Dr. Bronners around will never fail you. Great for a no-nonsense pageant girl!

Michael Todd

YouTubers LOVED Michael Todd. Their favorite products? The Honey & Oat Deep Pore Gel Cleanser, Citrus Cream Moisturizer, Tropical Fruit Scrub, and the Knu Anti-Aging Serum. The products boast organic ingredients and a “made in the USA” stamp. No animal testing is another great bonus and the lack of parabens and other artificial ingredients make for feel good, safe skin care products. People overall seemed to really enjoy Michael Todd’s products, and I would definitely give them ago. They are affordable and offer skin care recommendations based on your skin type!

Hoped these summarized reviews helped! I’ll be testing new organic skin care products, and if I like them they’ll pop up on my favorite products for the month posts. Stay tuned because I will discuss three more organic skin care brands in “All-Natural Beauty: Skin Care Part II!”

Also, don’t forget to CLICK the brand names, they lead to where you can buy the products!

Beauty on a Budget: Nail Polish

Beauty on a Budget_ Nail Polish

Nails are an important part of any pageant girl’s look. Well-kept nails make you look put together and chic. However, nail polish, especially when worn on your hands, seems to chip within days. Not so good, so we end up shelling out more than we like for high end nail polish that last. What if I told you that you could find budget nail polishes that do the same? Well, PageantToPhD is here to bring you our top 5 budget nail polishes that will last, dry fast, and get the job done!

1. Essie Nail Polish

Essie’s large range of colors, cute packaging, and long wear make it a favorite amongst reviewers. These nail polishes have a beautiful shine sans topcoat, and they also have a fun variety of textures from glitter to satin. Additionally, they can last about a week and cost under $10!

2. Revlon Colorstay Nail Enamel

Revlon has once again made our budget beauty list! Reviewers loved this nail polish for its naturally glossy finish and its chip-free nature. Its consistency is thinner than other brands, but this helps prevent chipping, which makes it last longer. Despite the thinness of the formula, it does not dry streaky. Overall, the nail polish’s quick-drying, long-lasting qualities make it a drugstore favorite. Perfect for a pageant girl on the go!

3. China Glaze

One of the hallmarks of China Glaze’s popularity is its ridiculously large color selection. The colors are very saturated, and best of all they last! You see China Glaze all over the internet, especially Pinterest. Their diverse color selection, and coveted “For Audrey,” which is a Tiffany’s blue, make them a must have drugstore nail polish for any pageant girl!

4. Sally Hanson Xtreme Wear Nail Color & Complete Salon Manicure

Sally Hanson is a drugstore favorite for its large variety of colors and nail polish lines (e.g., Xtreme Wear and Insta-Dri). The Sally Hanson nail polishes did the job, and did it well. Most reviewers found no need for a topcoat because of the thick, glossy formula. Another bonus was the nice price range, starting at $1.99 and up. A great bargain for a budget-bound pageant girl!

5. Wet n’ Wild MegaLast Nail Polish

Wet n’ Wild is always a budget beauty favorite because of its low price point and large variety making it a great brand to affordably try new colors. Reviewers loved MegaLast because of its fast-drying, true-to-color, and long-lasting properties. Furthermore, the under $3 price is hard to beat. A pageant girl can look great for less, and still have money to buy even more budget brands!

Favorite Products for June

Favorite Products for June

We are well on are way into summer, and I hope you lovely pageant ladies are finding some time to treat yourselves and relax! This month I have been testing out sunscreens and bronzers, as I have never truly found one that I have fallen in love with. So here are my favorite products for June, chockfull of summery fun! :)

1. Tory Burch: Perfume

Tory Burch recently came out with its first ever perfume. I was curious, and with its beautiful packaging why not give it a try? It was love at first sniff! The perfume is perfect for spring and summer as it is light and sweet, but has the right amount of depth. This combination makes it the perfect perfume to take from night to day. I have trouble sticking with one scent, but added this one to my rotation. I absolutely love it, and what pageant girl does not want to smell divine for her pageant?

2. Too Faced: Chocolate Soleil Medium/Deep Matte Bronzer

Talk about yummy! This bronzer smells like chocolate! Additionally, the bronzer’s consistency is soft and creamy making application a dream. A little goes a long way, especially with my fairer complexion, but I felt it gave my skin a natural sun-kissed look. Furthermore, the bronzer is very buildable, which gives it great versatility should you tan more as the summer progresses. Give this delicious smelling bronzer a try, and you’ll definitely look like a bronzed goddess for your pageant!

3. Dr. Hauschka: Cleansing Milk

I recently wrote a blog post on organic beauty brands (*hint*), and decided to sample one of the products mentioned. I have absolutely fallen in love with it! Most cleansers are way too drying for my skin, and I end up breaking out or having dry skin. I switched to this all-organic cleanser and have never been happier. It is soft and creamy, and leaves my skin feeling hydrating. My skin doesn’t feel as though it’s being stripped of all its natural oils, and my overall skin tone has improved. If you want beautiful, pageant-ready skin sans chemicals try this product!

4. SuperGoop! Sun-Defying Sunscreen Oil Broad Spectrum SPF 50

I sampled Sephora’s Sun Safety Kit, which was chockfull of sunscreens and bronzers to try! One of the sunscreens was this lovely oil. I wasn’t sure about it at first, but I ended up really liking it. It’s formulated without parabens, sulfates, or phthalates. Although it is an oil, it doesn’t feel greasy. In fact when first applied it makes your skin look dewy and healthy. I prefer it for use on my body to my face, as I am not a huge fan of facial oils to begin with, but how you use it will depend on your preference! Another bonus is that it smells great too! Every pageant girl needs to remember to apply sunscreen to maintain healthy skin!

5. Soap & Glory: Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Stick

I recently discovered this gloss stick while watching a YouTuber who raved about the product. She said it was moisturizing, plumping, and just the right amount of color. And you know what? She was absolutely right! I have the gloss stick in Fuschia-Ristic, a nice pink color that’s perfect for summer! It also comes in a burgundy berry (Plum Jam) and a natural pink beige color (Nudist). This gloss stick makes lips look plump, full, and luscious. Everything a pageant girl wants to look great for her pageant!

P.S. What were your favorite products this June? Let me know below! :)

Beauty on a Budget: Bronzer

Beauty on a Budget- BronzerSummer is well underway, and many of us are hitting up the pool or the beach! Summer is the time of year to get that beautiful golden glow for your pageant. However, baking under the sun for hours is not ideal. Luckily, we have bronzer to give us that natural sun-kissed look. Now many may turn to the high-end brands, but I find that anything upwards of $25 is just too much to pay (unless it works crazy well). Yet, many avoid the drugstore brands in fear of looking orange. But worry not! PageantToPhD is here to make sure you get quality for the right price without looking like an Oompa Loompa!

1. NYC: Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder in Sunny

By far the most popular and widely loved drugstore bronzer, NYC’s Sunny Bronzer was adored for it’s neutral range (it was neither too cool nor warm). Thus, it is versatile on a large array of skin tones. Furthermore, the formula is sheer meaning it is easily buildable should you want a more dramatic look. Additionally, its sheerness equals a more naturally luminous tan. Another bonus? It costs under $4! Great for a pageant girl on a budget!

2. Physician’s Formula: Bronze Booster

Physician’s Formula is another popular brand for bronzers, and many of their bronzer formulas were on top drugstore bronzer lists. The Bronze Booster is a collection of tiny, bronzed “sun” stones that you can swirl your brush around to pick up color. This bronzer has good pigmentation with a golden hue, which makes for a perfect, natural pageant look.

Furthermore, you can layer it on top of a deeper bronzer to give it more dimension and glow. Also, don’t forget to check out their Happy Booster Glow and Mineral Wear Face Powder Bronzer.

3. Rimmel London: Natural Bronzer

This bronzer is great for those with fairer complexions! It is a little warmer than NYC’s Sunny, and thus is more flattering on those pageant ladies with lighter skin tones. Furthermore, it acts as both a bronzer and a highlighter, and gives a matte finish with a little oomph. Additionally, it is very smooth and goes on sheer for a gorgeous, luminous glow. Also, check out Rimmel’s Shimmer Maxi Bronzer.

 4. E.L.F.: Bronzer

Another great, affordable alternative, the E.L.F. bronzer is under $4 as well! It has a bronze gold hue and is silky, which translates into streak-free and longwearing. Perfect for a long day at your pageant! This bronzer bestows a subtle, sun-kissed radiance to the skin. A great bargain for a naturally tanned look.

  1. Maybelline New York: FIT me! Bronzer

This brand is great because the color is personalized to best fit your skin tone. Thus, when you apply it, it blends beautifully and naturally into the skin. Furthermore, it is long lasting and not prone to fading meaning you will have a wonderful all-day glow. Additionally, the formula is lightweight making for a quick application that won’t feel cakey as the day wears on. Perfect for a pageant girl who needs a bronzer that goes the distance!

P.S. What are your favorite drugstore bronzers? Let me know in the box below! :)

Favorite Products for May

Favorite Beauty Products for MayThe end of May is here and so is another “Favorite Products of the Month!” I am very excited for this month’s products because they have become some of my absolute favorites! From lipsticks to body scrubs this month is packed full of fun, brightly packaged products that will bring a smile to your face. So check’em out and enjoy! :)

1.    M.A.C. Lipsticks (Morange, Sunny Seoul, & Candy Yum Yum)

M.A.C. is renowned for its lipsticks, at least among the beauty mavens on YouTube. For a long time I had yet to own any M.A.C. lipsticks, but recently I have been inducted into the M.A.C. lipstick lovers fandom. I recommend that every pageant girl at least owns one or two! These lipsticks are awesome, and they come in such a wide variety it borderlines overwhelming. I was able to narrow down my choices thanks to the YouTubers I follow, and have happily purchased the three colors mentioned in the title.

Morange is a bright orange that seems to just work well on anyone. It fades to a pleasant coral color over the course of the day, and is a great statement lipstick. Candy Yum Yum is another statement lipstick. It’s an in-your-face bright pink that means business. It almost borderlines retro for me, and thus makes it simply amazing. Sunny Seoul is tame compared to the previous two, and is a wonderful pink summery shade. Perfect for applying on the go, it is a great lipstick to have stored on hand at all times! :)

 2.    Tarte: Smooth Operator™ Amazonian Clay Waterproof Concealer

Foundation and concealer have never been my friends. I have not used foundation in the last four years and use concealers sparingly. This is because I have an absolutely horrid time trying to find a color that matches my skin tone. I am mixed (Asian and Caucasian); the result is a golden yellow and pink skin tone that borders porcelain and fair depending on the season.

I had almost given up hope when I discovered this concealer by Tarte! It blends nicely into my skin tone, but is ever so slightly lighter, which is great because then it brightens my under eyes. Furthermore, this stuff is waterproof, which translates into staying power. So far I have loved it, and definitely recommend to any pageant girls who struggles with the same skin tone problem I have!

 3.    Benefit Cosmetics: Gimme Brow

I heard about this product, and was skeptical at first. Then I watched an infomercial (yes a Benefit infomercial), and was somewhat convinced. I took a chance and bought it, and have loved it since. It subtly fills in brows and gives them more volume in the best way possible. They don’t look drawn in, and instead the formula fills in sparse areas to give you a fuller looking brow. A definite must for any pageant ladies that suffer from sparse or thin brows!

 4.    Soap & Glory: Sugar Crush™ Body Scrub & Flake Away™ Body Polish

May I just say, holey moley these are wonderful! And the smell, it’s to die for! I have tried two of Soap & Glory’s body scrubs (i.e., Sugar Crush™ and Flake Away™). Sugar Crush ™ smells like a margarita minus the alcohol. It is super refreshing and great for summer. Plus it really does work as a great body exfoliator! Flake Away ™ also has a glorious smell, and the smell lasts longer on the skin. Flake Away™ pairs well with The Righteous Body Butter mentioned below. Both come in sample sizes that are reasonably priced, so give them a try! You will smell absolutely fabulous for your pageant!

5.    Soap & Glory: The Righteous Body Butter

I tried a sample size of this along with Flake Away™ as my first foray into the Soap & Glory brand. The combination of the two makes you smell simply divine. Furthermore, the body butter is rich and creamy. It leaves your skin baby soft and very hydrated. This will become an after shower staple in my beauty routine. Whether for summer or winter, this lotion is a great way to have beautiful skin for your pageant!

P.S. What were your favorite products this month? I would love to know so comment below! :)
